The Importance of Patient Advocacy: A Personal Experience

As a psychiatric provider, I dedicate my career to ensuring that clients feel heard, understood, and well cared for. But recently, I found myself on the other side of the healthcare system—not as a provider, but as a patient. And the experience was frustrating, exhausting, and eye-opening.

I was told that I needed surgery, and like any patient, I expected the process of scheduling it to be relatively straightforward. However, the clinic where my doctor practiced made that nearly impossible. The surgery coordinator and front desk staff ignored my calls, failed to return messages, and left me in limbo with no clear path forward. I was left feeling frustrated, not just because I needed medical care, but because I had to fight just to receive the basic courtesy of a returned phone call.

Ultimately, I had to escalate the situation by filing a complaint and involving a patient advocate just to get my surgery scheduled. That process, which should have been seamless, became an unnecessary battle. I wasn’t just dealing with a medical issue—I was dealing with a system that made me feel unheard, unimportant, and powerless.

This experience only reinforced my commitment to the standard of care we uphold at South Chesapeake Psychiatry. Here, we make it a priority to ensure that our clients never feel dismissed or neglected. We pride ourselves on communication, responsiveness, and an unwavering dedication to providing the best patient experience possible.

No one should feel minimized or defeated when seeking treatment. We believe that every individual deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and urgency. If my experience taught me anything, it’s that quality care isn’t just about medical treatment—it’s about making sure every client feels valued, supported, and advocated for.
